This ecosystem, known as the boreal forest or skog, undergoes a profound structural change when the first heavy snows arrive, creating a temporary architecture of white that dictates the survival strategies of every living inhabitant.

    The Architecture of the Snow-Covered Canopy

    The visual identity of the Nordic winter forest is defined by the weight of the snow on the trees. Coniferous species, primarily the Norway Spruce (Gran) and the Scots Pine (Tall), have evolved specific morphologies to cope with this seasonal burden. The spruce, with its downward-sloping branches, is designed to shed heavy snow before the weight can snap its limbs.     • Lichens: Species like Horsehair Lichen (Garnlav) become essential winter fodder for reindeer when ground vegetation is inaccessible.
