This apex predator, renowned as the fastest animal on the planet, patrols the rugged coastlines of Norway and the vast, forested expanses of Sweden and Finland. To witness a peregrine in a high-speed "stoop" or hunting dive is to observe the raw physical limits of the avian world, where gravity and biology combine to reach speeds exceeding 320 kilometers per hour.

    Habitat and Distribution in the North

    In the Nordic regions, the Peregrine Falcon is a bird of open landscapes and dramatic verticality. Traditionally, they favor steep cliff faces (stup) overlooking water or expansive wetlands, providing them with both a secure nesting site and a clear vantage point for hunting. In Norway, they are frequently found along the jagged Atlantic fjords, while in Sweden, they inhabit both the Baltic archipelagos and the remote mires of Norrland. To survive the immense pressure of their 300 km/h dives, they possess specialized bony tubercles in their nostrils that deflect the airflow, allowing them to breathe without damaging their lungs. Their eyes are equipped with a third eyelid, or nictitating membrane, which clears debris and maintains moisture during high-speed flight.

    Their diet consists almost exclusively of other birds. In the Nordic wilderness, this includes ducks, waders, and various passerines. The hunt is a display of calculated violence; the falcon climbs to a great height, folds its wings against its body, and drops like a stone. It strikes its prey with a clenched talon, usually killing it instantly upon impact before circling back to retrieve the falling carcass.
