Beyond its economic and culinary significance, the salmon is a keystone species whose presence dictates the health of entire river ecosystems from the fjords of Norway to the Baltic coast of Sweden.
Life Cycle and Extraordinary Migration
The life of a Nordic salmon begins in the gravelly beds of upland rivers. After hatching, the young fish, known as parr, spend two to five years in their natal stream, developing the strength and camouflage necessary to survive. As they mature into smolts, their physiology undergoes a profound shift called smoltification, allowing them to transition from freshwater to the high salinity of the ocean. They then embark on an epic migration, often traveling thousands of kilometers to feeding grounds near Greenland or the Faroe Islands.

After several years of rapid growth at sea, the adults return to the exact river—and often the specific stretch of gravel—where they were born.
